Bring new and gently-used children’s books to this weekend’s Back-to-School Bash at The Falls
On Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7, Read to Learn Books for free will collect book donations at Kiddos Magazine’s Back-to-School Bash at The Falls shopping center. This two day event will include arts and crafts, face painting, sports demonstrations, science and arts projects, storytelling, and more, as well as feature over 30 exhibitors.
Our mission is to bring together all the tools and resources to make the best of [kids’] lives,” says Veronica Lepere, Founder and Publisher of Kiddos Magazine. “What better opportunity than to help this incredible initiative and bring to kids the most important learning resource of literature!”
Read to Learn Books for Free is a program of The Children’s Trust in partnership with Miami Book Fair at Miami Dade College. The program encourages children and parents to read together by placing shelves full of free books in 40 locations throughout Miami-Dade County.
One of these bookshelves is located at Edison/ West Little River Community Resource Center, one of 13 centers under the umbrella of Miami-Dade County’s Community Action and Human Services Department. Edison Center provides members of its community with services like juvenile diversion programs, employability skills workshops, job search assistance, and more. Linda Taylor, Edison Center Director, says that she sees both children and parents interacting with the bookshelf on a daily basis.
The books promote the importance of reading and opens the imagination to the world beyond,” she says. “The Book Fair coordinators are very responsive to requests for books, topics, languages, etc. and the bin is always stocked.”
Read to Learn Books for Free keeps that bookshelf, and all the others, stocked with free books through donations made at over 30 drop off locations, including libraries, local businesses, and police departments, and at family events like this weekend’s Back-to-School Bash. Lepere says that she hopes kids and parents alike will make help make a difference by donating their gently-used books.
This is a great opportunity for parents to teach their kids the importance and joy of giving, the sense of charity, and compassion,” says Lepere. “Just looking at your kids dropping books inside the bins will be an unforgettable learning experience.”
